About Lantern

How Lantern started

With a pot of soup in 2017. Here’s our story, what we believe and who leads us.

Friends around a campfire at night

Our story

It started with soup

In 2017, Nate and Ivy started making soup on Sunday evenings for anyone in their building who wanted company. Somebody brought a guitar. Somebody asked if they could read the Bible together. Somebody else brought their roommate. By the end of the year there were forty people in a one-bedroom apartment, and the landlord had questions.

We moved into the old print works on Lamplight Row in 2019. We still start every Sunday with dinner, and the soup recipe hasn’t changed.

What we believe

What we believe

01

Jesus

He is the light of the world, and the darkness hasn’t put him out (John 1).

02

God’s table

He invites everyone to his feast, especially people on the outside.

03

The Bible

We read it together, ask questions out loud and let it have the final word.

04

Nobody eats alone

Every new person gets introduced to someone at their table.

05

Passing it on

We try to carry what we’ve been given into the rest of the week.

Our team

Who leads us

Nate and Ivy started Lantern. Theo runs the kitchen and plans the menus, which he takes very seriously.
